ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS K-5

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are interrelated skills and are an important part of everything students learn and do in school. As children develop as readers and writers, they grow in their use and understanding of language by engaging in a variety of experiences. Through the rich language of literature and balanced reading and writing programs, children receive direct instruction in a range of skills.

  • Thank You

    Thank you Pelham Education Foundation!

Our reading and writing program has undergone quite a transformation over the past two years.  The district has moved to a Reading and Writing Workshop Model.  The Pelham Education Foundation along with the district has been very supportive of the work in this area.  An integral component of the workshop model is a mini-lesson.  During the mini-lesson the teacher provides direct, explicit instruction to model a reading or writing strategy. Key resources for the mini-lessons are mentor texts that the teacher utilizes during the instruction.  In the spring of 2014 the elementary schools were fortunate to receive a very generous grant from the Pelham Education Foundations to purchase mentor texts (picture books, series books, chapter books, nonfiction magazines) for the teachers to use to model specific skills and strategies in the area of reading and writing.  Thank you!
